Honduras Medical Mission & The Value of Community

February 24, 2026 | Christopher J. Perry, CFA, CFP®, RICP®

I recently returned from a week-long medical mission trip to Honduras with the St. Norbert Paoli Parish team, partnering with One World Surgery. One World Surgery operates the Holy Family Surgery Center on the grounds of the children’s home, Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH). Here, individuals and families often travel for hours to see a provider or receive surgery. The care delivered by the Honduran medical staff and mission volunteers is nothing short of extraordinary. The physical and emotional healing is powerful to witness.

Serving as a general volunteer, I had the opportunity to see the value of community firsthand. Community was evident everywhere; within our St. Norbert team, among the Honduran staff and volunteers, and throughout the families connected to NPH. One moment that especially stayed with me was working alongside a Honduran staff member in the NPH kitchen. After preparing a meal together for about 150 Honduran children, she proudly introduced me to her family members, young and old, who were living, working, and supporting one another on the grounds. Her pride in her family and community was unmistakable.

What I experienced in Honduras reminded me of the value of being connected with others in community. Ways to stay connected may include volunteering, joining interest-based clubs, being part of faith-based groups or engaging with family members and friends. Especially in retirement, where a feeling of isolation may become more prevalent, staying connected can help ensure a happier and healthier life.

As One World Surgery shares “our strength comes from our long-term collaboration and commitment to our Honduran community. One of their guiding principles, displayed on the NPH grounds, captures it beautifully: “I Can Do Things You Cannot, You Can Do Things I Cannot, Together We Can Do Great Things” – Mother Theresa

I am grateful for this experience and I am reminded that sharing life with those around fosters connection, purpose, and joy.
